7/5/07 Muchos en mi oficina han vuelto de sus vacaciones. Los cubículos han empezado a llenarse y se escuchan por todos lados diferentes voces tratando de comunicar sus experiencias de vacaciones. Donde fueron, cómo lo hicieron, que vieron, que comieron, que les ocurrió, si se enfermaron, si les gustó el lugar que visitaron. Algunos se han detenido frente a mi cubículo y me cuentan que 2 semanas fuera de casa (de la oficina, diría yo...) fue demasiado y que estaban ansiosos por volver.
A no ser que uno lo pase muy mal, es raro encontrar a alguien que quiera volver a la oficina después de unas vacaciones. El cuerpo y la mente quieren seguir de vacaciones, ¿no es verdad?
Ayer fue feriado aquí y hacia un calor agobiante, lo que en cierta forma le resta placer a las horas de "ocio". Al salir a dar un paseo al atardecer, cuando el sol no picaba tanto, era fácil notar que el número de personas deambulando por las calles de mi pequeña ciudad era reducido. O estaban en casa, haciendo sus BBQs o simplemente se habían ido a la playa, a Santa Cruz, a San Francisco (donde no hay playa, ja ja ja) o estaban a puertas cerradas, con sus AC/AA funcionando a todo vapor o a toda electricidad y tomando galones de agua. Por mi parte tomé varios litros, que al final del día me tenían el sistema haciendo glu glu glu y la ropa la sentía cada vez más ajustada :). Creo que esos litros de agua hicieron subir mi peso unas 5 libras o en buen romance unos 2 kilos!
Los restaurantes de la calle Castro, que generalmente están muy concurridos, estaban a medio llenar - los que estaban abiertos claro está - porque no había muchos atendiendo público. La mayoría de esos restaurantes son asiáticos..., y siguen llegando o abriendo nuevos. Acaban de abrir uno que le han llamado "Hong Kong Bistro" (una cruza de francés con asiático o al revés (¿?) y por supuesto que la gente quiere probar y ese si que tenia público, principalmente en las mesas colocadas en la vereda. Me pregunto como será la comida que sirven. A lo mejor es parecida a la del restaurante del frente que es chino, de China, también de los múltiples taiwaneses, tailandeses, indios, japoneses, italianos, brasileños, españoles y de varios otros países (más asiáticos que de otros continentes) cuyos nombres no recuerdo en estos momentos. Hay tantos y al final casi todos huelen parecido. Pasearse por la calle Castro es darse un baño de olores culinarios. También miré con atención a la diversidad de comensales y a los platos que se servían, ya que estaban sentados frente a sus comidas dispuestas en mesas en las aceras. Arroces de todo tipo, trozos de pollo asado al grill, vegetales, y otras mezclas de carnes con verduras, pastas, ensaladas y curries o similares. Cada vez que paso por allí, siento un embriagador olor a carnes asadas, adosadas con ajo y especias del oriente, que pueden abrir el apetito hasta a un difunto.
Pocos autos, poca gente, pocos negocios abiertos y mucho, mucho calor. Unos 30 grados Celsius a las 8 de la tarde. Seguro que a mediodía el termómetro estaba bordeando los 40. Dicen que hoy sobrepasará esa cifra. ¡Nos vamos a cocinar! Cuando oigo las cifras en Fahrenheit (las que usan aquí), mi cerebro quiere de inmediato procesarlas en Celsius, imagino que en un vano intento de no verlas tan abultadas. Uno se siente mejor en una temperatura ambiente de 38 grados Celsius que en una de 105 F, ¿verdad? ¡Dos dígitos de temperatura son más soportables que tres! -G

Span 1A at SCAES - 2009 Winter Term Homework for Wednesday Dec 2, 2009.
To all my students of Span 1A @ SCAES:
Please use your book Spanish Now! and learn the vocabulary that appears on pages number XIV ~ XXIV and do all the exercises in lessons:
I. La casa
II. Una escuela
III. La ciudad
IV. Los alimentos
V. Acciones
Read the sentences in this lesson and try to get the meaning of them from the pictures. Do exercises under PREGUNTAS A & B.
VI. Descripciones
These words are adjectives (used to describe things, objects, persons, places, activities, etc.). Do exercises under PREGUNTAS A & B.
We will review these exercises in our next class as well as everything that you have learned in this Spanish class, up until now. We will also study and learn when and how to use the Spanish verbs Ser & Estar (To Be, in English). I'd encourage you to learn more about this subject (verbs Ser & Estar) in an earlier post on this blog (Saturday, March 15, 2008).

Fue un placer conocerlos y poder compartir lo que sé de mi idioma materno con ustedes. Disfruté mucho esta experiencia de aprendizaje y enseñanza porque ustedes son excelentes estudiantes e hicieron muy amena nuestra clase.

There is a dictionary as well in the website and I liked it very much. That was how I got led to the website.
Please let me know if you get around to teaching the next level and if I am still around I will be keen to take it. I think I might do a better job at preserving what I have learnt this time compared to all other classes I have taken like martial art etc :).
I am already looking for any side by side Spanish-English text on buses, anything I buy :) Definitely, it would be great to keep in touch with you through your blog and i will try to. And I dont mind if you wouldlike to keep this exchange as part of the blog.

Un nuevo cuento para lectores grandes y pequeños
Aquí va el cuento que leeré esta semana para los pequeñines de la biblioteca de Mountain View. El cuento original fue escrito por Ana Pérez Lomeli y lo adaptamos para este espacio.
El Hada Primavera
Hace miles de años luz, en cierta galaxia no muy lejana, existía un planeta árido, sin vegetación. En ese planeta, vivían muchas personas en una esfera gigante que les protegía de los intensos rayos solares y les proporcionaba el oxígeno que necesitaban para vivir.
En el planeta había una niñita, a la que le gustaba mucho leer cuentos de hadas. Todos los días visitaba la biblioteca astral donde iba a observar las bellas ilustraciones, que estaban para su deleite, en la sala de cuentos planetarios infantiles. Se maravillaba hojeando libros de tan lindos colores. ¡Qué hermoso era todo eso!
Cierto día salió a explorar el resto de la biblioteca y llegó a un lugar donde nadie podía entrar: era la bodega astral, donde encontró un libro único. ¿Qué tendrá este libro?, se preguntó. Llena de curiosidad se precipitó a tomarlo y al abrir su primera página encontró una pequeña flor marchita, pero que aún así le pareció muy linda. La acercó a su rostro y pudo percibir su suavidad y su olor.
-¡Qué hermosa es y qué rico huele! -dijo muy despacito, la niña
- ¿Qué flor será?, -preguntó en voz alta.
- Es una rosa, -le contestó una viejecita que en ese instante pasaba por ahí.
- ¡Cómo me gustaría poder verla viva! -dijo la niña.
- ¿Te gustaría eso?, -preguntó la viejecita y al momento se convirtió en una hermosa hada.
- Sí, lo deseo con todo mi corazón, -exclamó la niña.

El Hada Primavera
Hace miles de años luz, en cierta galaxia no muy lejana, existía un planeta árido, sin vegetación. En ese planeta, vivían muchas personas en una esfera gigante que les protegía de los intensos rayos solares y les proporcionaba el oxígeno que necesitaban para vivir.
En el planeta había una niñita, a la que le gustaba mucho leer cuentos de hadas. Todos los días visitaba la biblioteca astral donde iba a observar las bellas ilustraciones, que estaban para su deleite, en la sala de cuentos planetarios infantiles. Se maravillaba hojeando libros de tan lindos colores. ¡Qué hermoso era todo eso!
Cierto día salió a explorar el resto de la biblioteca y llegó a un lugar donde nadie podía entrar: era la bodega astral, donde encontró un libro único. ¿Qué tendrá este libro?, se preguntó. Llena de curiosidad se precipitó a tomarlo y al abrir su primera página encontró una pequeña flor marchita, pero que aún así le pareció muy linda. La acercó a su rostro y pudo percibir su suavidad y su olor.
-¡Qué hermosa es y qué rico huele! -dijo muy despacito, la niña
- ¿Qué flor será?, -preguntó en voz alta.
- Es una rosa, -le contestó una viejecita que en ese instante pasaba por ahí.
- ¡Cómo me gustaría poder verla viva! -dijo la niña.
- ¿Te gustaría eso?, -preguntó la viejecita y al momento se convirtió en una hermosa hada.
- Sí, lo deseo con todo mi corazón, -exclamó la niña.

Para M&B: mira las palabras en cursiva azul
El domingo es mi día favorito porque no voy va a la oficina. Descanso mucho, leo un par de revistas, miro la televisión, cocino comida rica y practico hablar y escribir en español. A nosotros nos gusta flojear o relajarnos durante los fines de semana. Vemos muchos programas en la televisión, durante cuatro horas. Todos los días mi marido me ayuda en la cocina -- él lava los platos. Y los fines de semana él lava la ropa. Él es maravilloso.
Me gusta comer diferentes tipos de comida -- mexicana, tailandesa, italiana..., pero la comida india es mi favorita. Vamos a diferentes restaurantes con nuestros amigos a probar nuevas exquisiteces. También, me gusta pintar, pero no tengo tiempo. Mañana es lunes y empezará una semana muy ocupada. A veces me pregunto ¿por qué o para que trabajamos tanto? Yo sé la respuesta -- porque necesitamos mucho dinero para tener una vida cómoda. Es triste. Pero ¿qué podemos hacer? No hay alternativa.
